Editor's Introduction

U-Know is about trying to make art and make a living at the same time, especially if you're young and you don't live in an urban centre, and most especially if you live in Cornwall. Written and researched by students on the BA (Hons) History of Modern Art and Design course at Falmouth College of Arts, U-Know is an antidote to any hasty view of Cornwall as the land of the tasteful seascape. It's about sculpture and dance and film and music, the rich diversity of artists who live and work in this region. It's about the difficulties they face in trying to stay. It's about finding a place to show or perform, about earning enough money to survive and still having enough time to make something wonderful. It looks at arts initiatives that actually help-or that become part of the problem. It's for and about those who are a long way from London, and to whom the arts really matter.
